The portuguese extreme wave contest is back!
Held every two years, the Nazaré Special Edition will take place in Praia do Norte a.k.a the Nazaré Canon, where 20 athletes will be fighting for their survival under extreme conditions.
With a waiting period of one month, starting on November 1st, this 3rd Special Edition will have among the big wave rider freaks names such as previous winners Luis "Porkito" Pereira, Paulo Costa and top riders such as Hugo Pinheiro and Manuel Centeno, amongst other portuguese wild cards to be announced. Pierre Louis Costes has accepted the challenge and will also be charging the massive walls of water.
The event will have extensive coverage by the Xtreme Channel and online through the site www.nazarespecialedition.com
Reports will also be available in the site of the media partner of this event: www.vert-mag.com
Cool, Chris and I will be 1 and 2 november in Portugal, so if the wave will be huge for the first days of the contest, it mans they will be huge for us too

The contest is still on hold because there were no ideal conditions so far...
Anyway, it seems that the waiting period will be enlarged 'till December, so we hope that the show will take place. By the way, check what's coming up next week:

PORKITO CHAMPION OF NAZARE!
Yesterday at 9h30 AM the Praia do Norte was angry. Over six meters high, the waves punished the Lighthouse while on the sand the main concern was with the athletes safety. The will of facing the biggest waves ever ridden on a portuguese wave championship balanced with the fear that someone might not overcome the weight of the Praia do Norte waves. None of the 20 athletes hesitated when the organization, by 11 Am, gave the most waited order: the Sumol Nazaré Special Edition was ON.
During six hours, the bodyboard was at it’s highest level. Divided in four heats – one hour each – the bodyboarders faced with respect the Nazaré waves. With respect but without fear. Tubes, aerials, insane drops on huge waves, gave the spectacle that the several hundred spectators deserved for holding out the cold during the entire day. In the end, everybody was pleased.
“Porkito” proved that Praia do Norte is his home ground, Pierre Louis Costes showed the skills – even when he had to hold out several minutes, without his board, in the impact zone - that make him the biggest young gun of the bodyboarding world and the Portuguese youngster, Jaime Jesus, showed his incredible resistance: he won the prize for the biggest wipe out. Manuel Centeno didn’t return home empty handed: he won the prize for the bigger wave. In the day that definitely placed Nazaré in the map of the world class big waves, the future of the sport also proved to be secured: in a very disputed classification, four athletes under 22 years old got in the top-8 and the runner-up is only 17 years old.
Dozens leashes broken, bended boards, a injured jet sky, a 4×4 bike stealed by the sea and 20 bodyboarders that will never forget the day os 16th December of 2007. These are the victims of the third Sumol Nazaré Special Edition.

Hej!
Only now I saw some of the sick frames from last week's NSE as I had to make a though choice between surfing some good waves near my place or watch 20 maniacs surf in a sick hell event... The option was quite obvious for me, but now that I saw the some photos of the event, I risk saying that this year the waves were the biggest ever in the last 2 championships.
manmanman wat een golven maybe biggest waves ever surfed in a bboardcomp some silly shit going on here, surfed there with dimitri but it was a lot more friendly!! Still heavy waves heaviest i ever surfed on that size.. so much power.. so go figure!!

The waves we surfed looked more friendly, but even though I was chicken scared with some of the pirate sets that were coming in the lineup that day. By no means I have the guts to surf Praia do Norte in more than 1solid "portuguese" meter... Peter, Mocca and Chris know how chicken-shit I am
I meant that these waves were the biggest ever ridden in a portuguese championship. Some pics I've watched look like hawaiian waves, but maybe I'm over-reacting
Any way, there wasn't much of a mass media coverage as I expected... The stand-ups attract far more attention when they're towed-in in the same wave conditions as it happened in late November when 3 surfers towed-in a wave near Cabo Raso and no credits were given for the 2 bodyboarders that were in the outside paddling in...

Anyway, NSE will hopefully be back in 2009 with heavier conditions!
